ZWOLEN

We first learned about the importance Zwolen played in our family from Joseph Spigelman (also Sigelman) on a visit to his home outside Paris in 1999. Joseph, a tailor born in Warsaw told us that generations of the family (including Szpigelmans, Wasermans and Finkelsztajns) had lived there before moving to Warsaw.  Knowledge of this and additional information provided Parisian family members, we were able to find vital records in Polish Archives helping to delineate the family. Our family genealogy records for the corresponding Walter/ Wasserman / Finkelstajn surname subgroup can be found here.

Zwolen lies on the Zwolanka River, approximately 20 miles from Radom and 75 miles (SSE) from Warsaw, Poland. Just before WWII there were about 3000 Jews there, about one half of the total population. Most of the town was destroyed by German Bombardment in September 1939. English sections of the Zwolen Yizkor Book can be found here.
