Introduction
Welcome to the Meetre Family Genealogy. The photo on this page is that of Wade and Melinda (nee Begley) Valentine, who were maternal great grandparents of Rick, Jeff and Janet Meetre. They like many of the Valentines lived in Kentucky for many generations. So far, we have been able to trace the Valentines back to a Henry Valentine who was born in approximately 1730. Henry (Rick’s fifth great grandfather) and his parents before him are not yet firmly identified since supporting paperwork is missing.
The paternal side of the family has been known to have Syrian roots. From Federal Census records we learned that Rick’s, Jeff’s and Janet’s grandfather, James Meetre, emigrated from Syria around 1903. In 1903 Syria had very different borders than what we see today. It was part of the Ottoman Empire and encompassed land that today includes Israel and Lebanon. Two documents we have found for James Meetre suggest he was born in Safad, Syria which we suspect is today Safed, Israel.
We will continue to work on these issues and others to advance the Meetre family history.
